Salad days

People often ask me why I’m not enormous. Even if I do have a penchant for cakes, I think what saves me is that my idea of a perfect meal at home is some variation on this. Mesclun, tomatoes (these yellow ones from Pierre have as much vitamin C as oranges), cucumber, radishes, broad beans, slivered zucchini flowers, spring onions, chives, olive oil and lemon juice: with two tartines on spelt bread, one with Georges‘ goat’s cheese and the other with herb-scented olive paste, what could possibly be better?

Thanks Lucy, that compliment means a lot coming from you!

Nora, I think I’m a summer food person at heart, even if there is a lot to be said for slow-simmering stews and root vegetables.

That’s great news, Roisin – I’ve been getting excited about potatoes lately too, they are so small and sweet at the moment.

You mean socca doesn’t count as “salad,” David?

Yum! Your salad does look great. Even the veg in chilly Winnipeg is improving right now – we had local asparagus very late this year, and more varieties of potato than I have seen before. Yay!
